Parish History

St. John's Mar Thomas Parish has served as a channel of God’s grace to his people as it enters her Silver Jubilee years. This grace has come from the early Mar Thoma immigrants from Kerala worshipping in sister parishes with great zeal of Christian faith, dedication and devotion to their Church of Eastern tradition and solemn liturgy. The steady arrival of Mar Thomamite immigrants necessitated the formation of the new parish which would become St. John’s Mar Thoma Church.

Our parish was founded in 1990 under the Diocese of North America and Europe of Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church. From it’s humble beginning of about 17 families worshiping together as a prayer group. A formal ratification of the Parish occurred on December 23, 1990 through Kalpana. The Church was fortunate to have its first Vicar Rev. Oommen George (now Rt. Rev. Dr. Thomas Mar Theethos Episcopa). At the end of 1991 the membership in the church had grown to 65 families. In the spring 1992 Rev. Dr. P.G George was appointed as the new vicar and that year end church membership grew to 80 families.

The belief was that people of profound faith could disagree with one another and yet rally behind the essential truth that there was one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and father of us all. In 1993 the Good Lord helped us to purchase the present Church building and the Parsonage from the United Methodist Church that had been used by us since 1990. The Church has continued to grow and remain a vibrant and vital part of the community and the Diocese.

The dedication service of St. John’s MTC was done on July 5th 1993 by His Grace Most Rev. Dr. Philipose Mar Chrysostom Marthoma Valiya Metropolitan in the presence of Rt Rev Geevarghese Mar Athanasius Episcopa. In 1994 Rev Dr. P. G. George was appointed as the Bishop Secretary and Rev. Thomas Alexander was appointed as our vicar. In 1996 Rev. Thomas Easow was appointed as the first full time vicar of our church.

We also praise and thank Almighty God for all His blessings and mercies for the ordination of Rev. Dennis Abraham who is a member of our parish.

By the grace and mercy of our God and the committed work of a team lead by the Vicar Rev. Jacob Verghese, the consecration and dedication of the newly built sanctuary on March 31st Saturday, 2012 by the Most Rev. Dr. Joseph Marthoma Metropolitan along with Diocesan Episcopa ,Rt. Rev. Dr. Geevarghese Mar Theodosius. The Holy Communion service in the newly consecrated Altar was celebrated by Theodosius Thirumeni on April 1st 2012.

We saw a steady growth in memberships in the subsequent years. Currently we are blessed with the strength of 243 families. Also we have eight active prayer groups and eight vibrant organizations which strengthens the parish and all other activities of the Church as a whole. Today, St. John’s Mar Thoma Church through its faith, the contribution of its people, its internal and outreach programs to the community and the world, the Church remains and will continue to remain an example of the power of God’s love, while looking forward to the future for the Golden years of her existence.
